NORTHLAND COMMUNICATIONS RECOGNIZED AS
ONE OF THE BEST PLACES TO WORK IN NEW YORK STATE
(Syracuse, NY – January 3, 2012) – Northland Communications reported that it has been named among the top 50 places to work in New York State for 2012, based on a survey and awards program that identifies the Empire State’s best employers.
"It is an honor to be recognized with this designation," said Jim McCarthy, president of Northland Communications. "Our employees take great pride in their jobs and are extremely professional in the service they provide. Making Northland a great place to work has always been one of the core philosophies of our organization. As our business has grown and evolved, it has become necessary to implement a more formal and tactical employee engagement strategy to ensure we are meeting the diverse needs of all of our team members. This award is confirmation that we are on the right track."
Personnel development is a specific area that Northland has focused on during the past few years. It has expanded its employee training programs to provide enhanced internal interactions and optimal customer service. "Employees are Northland’s most important asset. We want to make sure we have the right person in the right job. And, we are proactive in empowering them to be successful in their positions," said McCarthy, noting that more than 25 percent of its workforce has earned the renowned Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification, which enhances problem-solving skills, develops innovative thinking, and promotes leadership.
Importantly, McCarthy added that its employees are dedicated to positioning Northland Communications at the forefront of the telecommunications industry in Central New York. "We are clear and unified in our mission and our goals, which has created a sense of camaraderie in our workplace. We reward exceptional job performance and offer opportunities for advancement. If our employees are thriving in their careers, that in turn will ensure that Northland thrives. Happy employees make for happy customers. Positive productive people are more successful and contribute to the success of others."
This is the fifth year for the statewide recognition program, which is the result of a partnership among the New York State Society for Human Resource Management, the Business Council of New York and Best Companies Group, an independent company that manages Best Places to Work programs on state, regional and national levels around the country.
In the fall, the Best Companies to Work for in New York program solicited companies from across the state to enter into a two-part process to determine the state’s best employers. To be considered for participation, companies had to: have at least 15 employees; be a for-profit or not-for-profit business or government entity; be a publicly or privately held business; have a facility in the New York; and have been in business for a minimum of one year. The Best Companies Group then evaluated and ranked the organizations for best employment based on employee satisfaction and engagement, as well as workplace practices and policies.
Northland Communications is headquartered in Utica, N.Y., with corporate offices in Utica, Syracuse and Holland Patent. Currently, it employs more than 105 people across the state.
"For more than 100 years, the Northland name has been synonymous with first-rate service, while bringing technological telecommunications advancements to Upstate New York," said McCarthy. "In our industry great technology is a given, it is our people who make the difference. I am proud of them for their commitment. We strive to be completely customer-focused in developing end-to-end telecommunications solutions for businesses or organizations in our operating region."
