The Future of IT: Meet Our Intern Alec

Name: Alec Helmer

School: Holland Patent High School

Grade Level: Senior

Anticipated Field of Study: Business & Computer Engineering

For some, the task of choosing a college and field of study is a daunting one. This wasn’t the case for our intern Alec Helmer, a senior at Holland Patent High School looking to study Business and Computer Engineering next year.

“My childhood was full of technology,” he said.

An avid gamer, Alec attributes his interest in computer engineering to his Dad, who manages an IT department. What started as a hobby for Alec, building gaming computers, has evolved into a real skill set. Now, with the help of the BOCES Regional Program for Excellence, Alec is able to take advantage of internship opportunities to see how he can potentially put his passions to work with a career in IT.

For the remainder of the school year, Alec will be working with the IT team at Northland to learn about computer hardware, load operating systems, network security, router configuration and NAT translations, VOIP phone systems and setup, intrusion detection and malware removal, equipment management, Windows servers, terminating Cat6 cables/pinouts, and Power Over Ethernet troubleshooting.

Alec will begin pursuing his bachelor’s degree next fall and is currently looking at colleges across the state, including SUNY Binghamton, Hobart, and St. Lawrence University.

Northland is proud to partner with the BOCES Regional Program for Excellence and local schools to promote STEM education and provide hands-on learning experiences for students outside of the classroom.
