Important Service Update: DNS Hosting & Domain Registration End-of-Life Notice

Northland Communications is committed to providing reliable and forward-thinking services. As part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen and modernize our offerings, we will be retiring our DNS Hosting and Domain Registration services effective March 1, 2026.

DNS Hosting Services – Ending March 1, 2026

Effective March 1, 2026, Northland will no longer support or offer DNS hosting services. Here’s what you need to know.

  • Action Required: All DNS Hosting services must be migrated to a new provider before this date to avoid service disruption.
  • Data Removal: Your DNS records will be removed from our servers on March 1, 2026, and DNS service will cease.
  • Next Steps: Begin the process of selecting and configuring a new DNS Hosting provider as soon as possible.
    • Step 1: Choose a new hosting service and setup your necessary records on the new service.
    • Step 2: If you have your own registration service, change the name servers to the new service.
    • Step 3: If Northland is your registrar, you need to contact our NOC, provide us with the new name servers to update our registrar. A name server change can take 24 to 48 hours to update.
    • Step 4: Once complete, follow the process outlined below to complete the transfer of your domain registration.

Domain Registration Services – Ending March 1, 2026

Northland’s Domain Registration services will also be discontinued. The timeline for action depends on your domain’s renewal date. To avoid a disruption in service you need to allow 60 days from your renewal date for the domain transfer to go through.

The typical time to process a DNS transfer is about 60 days so if your current contract is within 60 days from today’s date, you will need to renew with Northland first, then arrange for your transfer. Making changes to your point of contact will also delay the start of the 60-day window so please check ahead of time that you have the correct contact associated. If you need help with any of this, the Northland NOC is available to assist.

Example #1 Today is October 1, 2025 and your domain renewal date is 12/31/25 You’re beyond the 60-day window and free to transfer ASAP.

  • Transfer Required: All Domain Registration services must be migrated to a new registrar at least 60 days prior to your set renewal date. If your contact information is correct, you will need to get a transfer code from our NOC to initiate the move. You will also see email from Northland about the transfer which will require a timely response to complete.
  • Contact Info: If you need to make a change to your point of contact, that will push back your 60-day window to the date you make that change.

Example #2 Today’s example date is December 1, 2025 and your domain renewal date is 12/31/25. This means you’re within the 60-day window and you need to renew with Northland before you are allowed to initiate the transfer of your domain.

  • Renewal and Transfer: You are inside of the 60-day renewal window and will need to renew your domain with Northland and then transfer it to a new provider.
  • Contact Info: If you need to make a change to your point of contact, that will push back your 60-day window to the date you make that change.
  • Support Available: Northland NOC is available to assist with updates and provide your exact renewal date.
