It’s time to finally hang up your landline

Phone Systems | By Northland Communications Team

Time to Hang Up Your Copper Landline POTS

POTS is an old telecom acronym that stands for “Plain Old Telephone Service” and it’s what most of us think about when we remember old telephones ringing in our home or work. For all intents and purposes, consider a POTS line any traditional copper landline.

We live in the digital age, so it’s no surprise that there is a real effort underway to transition remaining copper POTS lines to a digital infrastructure like VoLTE (Voice-over LTE.) VoLTE allows us to make calls over the internet, just like we do with video calls. While business phones may have begun that transformation years ago, there are many other uses for POTS lines that remain in place. Services like fire alarms, security systems, elevators, fax machines, and point-of-sale machines, can still use a hardline connection today.

Why Change Now?

Like many other aging pieces of infrastructure, old copper phone lines are becoming more and more expensive to service and maintain. Those costs inevitably get passed down to you, the consumer.

The time to replace your remaining copper lines is NOW because the hard costs associated with maintaining them will only continue to rise. The FCC is pushing providers to make the case to our customers that we need to work together to upgrade to the infrastructure of tomorrow. VoLTE technology which has replaced copper lines is less to maintain, offers better call quality, and is more reliable.
